Security and CCTV sales shoot up in Potters Bar
With burglary ever more on the rise, business is booming for Potters Bar security services.
Businesses selling services such as CCTV, alarms, and gates and grills have noticed a “massive” increase and demand in the last year or two.
In April, burglaries had risen by 64 per cent within a three-month period, according to police figures.
There had been 72 break-ins in Potters Bar and Shenley between December 2017 and February 2018, compared to 44 during the same period last year.
Ashish Malhotra of Zenith Multimedia Services on Darkes Lane estimated that installing security services such as alarms and CCTV systems amount to 30 to 40 per cent of his computer business, with a considerable uptick in the last two years.
“There’s a massive increase in people putting cameras and alarms up,” he said.
“It feels good for business, but I’m more worried about customers and residents in Potters Bar.”
Having taken plenty of security measures himself, he added that he wasn’t worried about the shop’s own safety.
Erol Osman, director of Drummond Security on Darkes Lane, echoed Ashish’s words.
The business has been in Potters Bar for 16 years, but have seen more and more demand in the past year.
He said: “With the number of break-ins and attempted break-ins on the increase in the past year, we have seen a sharp rise in the demand for increased security.
“Physical security such as gates and grills have been really popular, along with high security lock upgrades and CCTV installations.”
He recommended that people prioritise physical security as well as CCTV and alarms, which he considers to be “the final piece of the jigsaw”.
He added: “As we all know, prevention is better than cure, so we would always recommend people focus on keeping the thieves out by making sure that all doors and windows are well secured and difficult to open by always double locking and fitting secondary security when possible.”
